With dual citizenship, American and Peruvian, he is the second pope from the American continent after his predecessor Francis, the first in history from the United States of America, and the first belonging to the Order of St. Augustine. In addition to English, he is fluent in Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese, and can read Latin and German.

The ring is known as the “Fisherman's Ring” because it depicts St. Peter casting a net into the sea. The cancellation of the ring and seal took place during the general congregation of cardinals, on the eve of the Conclave to elect a new Pontiff.
